As we look beyond the 2015 deadline for achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) the sector continues to refine its priorities accordingly. There are many ways to look at how individuals and organisations can contribute, one of which considers the growing urban landscape.
The purposes of the Civil Society Monitoring Report 2012 are for civil society to be recognised, better understood and bring awareness to challenges faced, as well as portraying developments over the past ten years. The executive summary takes into account the progress of civil society in the period of 2011-2012, as well as the significant milestones, and contains brief situation analyses regarding the major topics of the report, and TUSEV’s recommendations.
TUSEV has started implementing the Balkan Civil Society Acquis, an EU-funded project whose aim is to strengthen the capacity and potential of civil society for monitoring and advocacy work.
“An example of common challenges is the fact that in Russia, China, Turkey, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia entities focused on promoting private philanthropy have been created in recent years. Some examples are IDIS in Brazil, Filantropia Transformadora in Colombia, the South African Institute for Advancement, the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV) and the Chinese Foundation Center. Maria Chertok, Director of Charities Aid Foundation Russia and WINGS Board Member, guest edited the March 2013 issue of Alliance magazine, along with Filiz Bikmen, Vice Chair of the International Center for Not for Profit Law and former Director of the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV). We caught up with Chertok and Alliance’s longtime editor Caroline Hartnell to talk about the magazine and the legacy of Philanthropy Bridge Foundation founder, Olga Alexeeva.
