International Meeting on the Enabling Environment for Philanthropy

Last week WINGS members and partners gathered at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal, to discuss how, as a network, we could help enable the environment for philanthropy – a meeting which was described as the most important meeting in philanthropy for over 45 years.

Over the two days, the participants set the scene and examined the state of civil society from international ,global and regional perspectives; looked at case studies and examined the shrinking space for civil society; and in breakout sessions examined challenges, strategies, successes and failures in mostly democratic, developing/transitioning societies and those facing increasing transitions.

On the second day, the participants discussed and deliberated over elements of effective advocacy in actions, again taking look at regional examples represented in the room.
